The Nonlinear Labs C15 is a 61-key digital keyboard intended to be played like an acoustic instrument, with an uncompromising focus on expressive performance. The C15 is the project of Stephan Schmitt — founder and long-time Chief Technical Officer of Native Instruments — who moved on to establish Nonlinear Labs to design digital instruments centered on flexibility and playability. There are no sequencers, arpeggiators, or LFOs; rather, the emphasis is put upon playing the instrument over automation, giving performers the ability to affect sounds on the fly via its premium Fatar keybed, dual full-length ribbons, unique pitch bender, and four pedal inputs. A true testament to the musical potential of human-centered instrument design, the C15 immediately gives a high-quality impression thanks to its combination of beautiful wood with robust steel and aluminium.

Key elements of its design:

• Phase 22 Synthesis Engine The sound generation section, named Phase 22, starts with just two sine-wave oscillators. It then uses a combination of frequency modulation, phase modulation, wave shaping, subtractive synthesis, an exciter/resonator, and feedback to create a diverse range of sounds — from very cold and digital to warm and organic tones.
• Two-Part Detachable Design The housing consists of two detachable parts. The compact Base Unit contains the keyboard, all performance elements, and the sound engine and audio components — usable on its own in "play only" situations — while the Panel Unit is a haptic interface for deep sound design, featuring 96 parameter-selector buttons, a central editing section, an encoder, and a larger OLED screen.
