For sale is a Marantz PMD720 cassette recorder. Serviced and Calibrated properly.
This unit has been carefully cleaned, and function-tested.
Playback, recording, transport controls, meters, and input/output functions have been tested and calibrated.
Cosmetically looks pretty much well preserved and appears that the previous owner did not use it so much.
【FAQ: What is calibration?】
For those, who does not understand what specifically calibration maintenance means, let me explain you.
Vintage unit like TASCAM, Marantz, YAMAHA usually loses its original electrical charactor due to many aging factors, resulting in showing wrong numbers in VU meters, low recording ,misaligned phase and very frequently planning imbalance.
When restoring old units, these paramators needs to be adjusted through recapping and calibration.
Calibration is the process of adjusting internal adjustment point to recover the unit's performance.
Most of the case, if you do DIY repair and just replaced the belt, you would notice that record level is noticebaly smaller than the level you must have recorded. And I think that is kind of the limit of DIY repair.
If you want to reach best performance, It would require you to read the service manual in detail, which is of course, quite troublesome and cost a lot of money for buying proper equipment that is required.
Still, due to analog nature it would not be ultra precise as much as software DAW but still there is definitely room to improve performance by adjusting internal settings rather than do nothing.
This is what I mean by "calibration".
This procedure requires precision analog meters and oscillators specifically made for the calibration as well as professionally recorded test tone tape.
I use all of them in the maintenance procedure. In the case of this units, the balance of output volume was incorrect, so I adjusted internal points to balance It in correct way.
