Built around real-time sampling, looping, pitch shifting and delay, it can take a simple guitar, synth or line-level signal and turn it into rhythmic micro-loops, huge ambient washes, evolving drones and deliberately unpredictable glitch textures. Rather than behaving like a conventional delay or modulation pedal, it can listen to what you play and use those fragments to create completely new rhythmic and atmospheric textures.Its 11 effects are divided across several families. Micro Loop includes Mosaic, Seq and Glide for overlapping, reordered and pitch-shifting loops; Granules includes Haze, Tunnel and Strum for atmospheric washes and fragmented textures; while the Glitch bank uses Blocks, Interrupt and Arp for more obviously rearranged and rhythmic effects. Two Multi Delay algorithms provide further forward, reverse and multi-tap delay possibilities.Despite its reputation for experimental sounds, it can also be used much more subtly. It can be positioned before or after the effects, used independently from the granular processing, overdubbed indefinitely and played backwards. This makes it possible to build an ordinary loop first and then process it, or instead capture a performance that already contains Microcosm's effects.The Hold function can freeze the effect at its current point and sustain the resulting texture indefinitely, allowing new parts to be played over the top. For ambient and experimental setups, this effectively allows the pedal to create its own evolving background layer.MIDI connectivity makes it particularly capable in larger pedalboards, synth rigs and synchronised setups, while the expression input can be mapped to different controls for real-time manipulation. The 16 user memories can store favourite effects, settings, configurations and even recorded loops for later recall.A great choice if you want an effects pedal that genuinely encourages experimentation rather than simply recreating familiar sounds. From subtle movement and spacious reverb through to cascading micro-loops, glitch rhythms and enormous ambient textures, the Microcosm offers a huge amount of creative potential in one unit.
