A model truly representative of Fodera's "premium custom brand" has arrived as a used instrument.
Named the "Compito Tribute Bass," this is a reproduction by Vinnie of the original bass made by bassist and luthier Joe Compito.
Going back in time, Wooten used a 5-string fretless bass made by his close friend, Joe Compito, for many years.
Sadly, Joe passed away at a young age, but the "Compito Tribute Bass" was created as a tribute to Wooten and in his memory.
The body design and other details have been reproduced as faithfully as possible, referencing Victor's original.
It features a purpleheart top and a mahogany back.
The large body size suggests a rich midrange, characteristic of a fretless bass.
The neck is a 5-piece construction, but the purpleheart in between is thicker than the usual Fodera size.
The ebony fingerboard features fret lines, and even here, purpleheart wood is used.
The neck-through construction is the traditional style, with the body sandwiched between the sides, another structure different from Fodera.
Even looking at this, it's completely different from existing models, isn't it?
As expected of a custom brand, there's a commitment to faithfully reproducing the original as much as possible as a new model.
The hardware uses standard Fodera components, and the pickups are the classic Fodera Duncan pickups.
The preamp is the so-called V3, the original Fodera preamp.
One interesting feature is that one of the switches is a "kill switch," which evokes a sense of nostalgia.
The back panel is also faithfully reproduced, not a recessed bubinga panel, but rather a "lid" attached to the body.
Now, playing it acoustically, you can enjoy a fretless sound with a solid fundamental tone.
The through-neck construction and body size demonstrate the meticulous design of this bass from the very beginning, making it understandable why Mr. Wooten still uses it today.
The original pickups faithfully reproduce the sound, offering a warm tone in the neck position and a crisp, punchy tone in the bridge position, accommodating a wide range of fretless sounds.
For fretless basses, passive pickups are usually sufficient, so the preamp should only be used for minor adjustments.
The bass responds beautifully depending on the pickup selection, picking technique, and playing style.
This isn't a typical Emperor or Monarch; it's a new, unique design, yet it still delivers that unmistakable Fodera sound—truly impressive!
Made in 2023, it appears to have been very carefully maintained, with no major dents or damage.
For those seeking a high-quality, original, and somewhat distinctive fretless bass.
