About this listing
For sale is a rare Don Grosh Retro Classic featuring a Brazilian Rosewood slab-board fingerboard, in the tradition of late-'50s / early-'60s Stratocasters.Brazilian Rosewood is the wood associated with some of the most desirable vintage Fender and Gibson instruments from the early 1960s, as well as many of the great pre-war and vintage Martin acoustics. Original instruments from that era now command extraordinary prices. In my opinion, Brazilian Rosewood is one of the elements behind the special character of many great vintage guitars ā there is a depth, response and feel to it that is very difficult to replicate with modern substitutes. This guitar often feels and sounds more like an old Fender than many modern Fenders do.The guitar is in very good condition with only minor signs of use. It is completely unmodified and everything works exactly as it should. It holds tuning very well and has the unmistakable character of a great early-'60s-style Strat, but with more modern playability and extremely precise boutique-level construction. In terms of build quality, I would put it at Fender Custom Shop level or above. This is a particularly light and exceptionally resonant example. It is loud and lively acoustically, with a very strong "played unplugged" response. I believe this is largely due to Don Grosh's careful wood selection and seasoning, the exceptionally tight neck-to-body fit, and the use of a traditional vintage-style single-action truss rod.The finish is a beautiful sunburst with a transparent center. The finish is very thin and appears to be nitrocellulose, although Grosh does not specify the finish type on the original spec sheet, so I cannot confirm this with absolute certainty. The guitar has a very wide dynamic range, excellent articulation and a distinctly vintage Strat character. At the same time, the 12" fingerboard radius gives it a much more modern feel. It allows for a low action, fast playing and wide bends without fretting out.Specifications:⢠Body: lightweight alder⢠Weight: 3.34 kg / 7.36 lbs⢠Neck: maple⢠Fingerboard: thick slab-board Brazilian Rosewood⢠Brazilian Rosewood: old stock / air dried, traditionally seasoned for many years, sourced from Takis Woods⢠Neck profile: Medium/Large Roundback (.800"ā.850")⢠Fingerboard radius: 12"⢠Scale length: 25.5"⢠Frets: 6105 medium-jumbo⢠Truss rod: traditional single-action design, adjustable at the body end with easy access⢠Tuners: locking Kluson⢠Bridge: Gotoh 1088 tremoloPickups:⢠Lindy Fralin Blues Special ā neck⢠Lindy Fralin Blues Special ā middle⢠Lindy Fralin SP43 ā bridgeElectronics:⢠5-way selector⢠Master Volume with treble bleed⢠Master Tone⢠Blend control ā allows the bridge pickup to be blended into the other switch positions and also gives access to the neck + bridge combination for a more Telecaster-like characterThe blend control works particularly well on this guitar, as it helps retain some of the open, woody character that is already very noticeable when playing the guitar unplugged.Comes with the dedicated G&G hardshell case and original documentation. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
