Karel Dedain is a Belgian luthier born in 1976. Passionate about the guitar and lutherie, he trained at the CMB (Centrum voor Muziekinstrumentenbouw) with Walter Verreydt. He then moved to Ghent, where he has been building guitars since 2006. He also devotes part of his time to teaching at the Center for Musical Instrument Making in Puurs, alongside his mentor Walter Verreydt. His traditional guitars are faithful to Spanish tradition, drawing inspiration from the great historical luthiers such as Torres, GarcĆa, Esteso, and Santos HernĆ”ndez. The quality of his work has earned him an international reputation.
The guitar presented here was built in 2019. It is a superb instrument, the craftsmanship is perfectly executed, the aesthetics are beautiful, and the woods, such as Madagascar rosewood and spruce for the top, are of the highest quality. Sound-wise, it is a powerful and consistent instrument. It combines the musicality of traditional guitars with the characteristics of more modern instruments. The notes are clear, colorful, and responsive. The timbre is expressive and deep. Its small size, inspired by early 20th-century guitars, its responsiveness, and its low action make it easy and enjoyable to play. This is an instrument worth discovering for those who are unfamiliar with this luthier's work.
