About This Model

The Sony MDS-JE510 is a home MiniDisc deck built around Sony's ATRAC 4.0 codec, implemented via dedicated ATRAC DSP hardware. For connectivity it offers RCA analogue inputs and outputs, a TOSLINK digital optical input and output, and a front-panel headphone jack (6.35 mm / ¼ inch). European and UK units also carry a coaxial digital input, and the European and Japanese versions of the deck include a 6-second time machine recording buffer and A-B repeat and erase functions — features tied to their specific ATRAC chip and external DRAM configuration. The JE510 is compatible with the RM-D10P remote titler for disc labelling. Two known mechanical weaknesses are worth bearing in mind: the disc insertion sensor microswitch can fail and cause the unit to power on automatically, and the transport eject mechanism has a documented tendency to jam over time.
