The 1959 model is widely regarded as the most refined year in the history of the Gretsch 6120, making it a rare and highly sought-after instrument on the vintage market. This specific unit shares identical specifications with the famous "59 Smokey"—Brian Setzer's third main guitar—offering a tonal response and presence that distinguishes it from modern reissues.

Provenance & Authentication

Serial Number: Due to replaced potentiometers, the manufacture year has been authenticated as 1959 via the serial number on the internal orange label.

Historical Significance: The serial number is close to Setzer's "Smokey." This actual guitar was previously featured in the renowned Japanese Gretsch specialty magazine, "All About 6120."

Body & Construction

Body Depth: 6.4cm (Approx. 2.5"). 1959 was a transitional period for body depth; this unit features the highly desirable "medium body" thickness, which moved away from the earlier 6.9cm (2.75") depth.

Trestle Bracing: Equipped with the iconic 1959 trestle bracing. Unlike the heavy bracing of early '59 models, this structure enhances resonance while maintaining the "airiness" of a full-hollow body. It provides a thick, clear, and punchy attack while effectively suppressing feedback at high volumes—a critical requirement for Rock 'n' Roll and Rockabilly.

Electronics & Hardware

Pickups: Original "Patent Applied For" (PAF) Filter'Trons. Combined with the 6.4cm body, these offer a fast transient response and the signature shimmering high-end characteristic of the era.

Modifications (Setzer Specs):

The zero-fret has been filled/removed.

Tuners upgraded to Sperzel locking tuners.

Strap pins replaced with locking pins (strap-side hardware missing).

Controls: 3-way Tone Switch (neck side) and 3-way Pickup Selector (bridge side). Capacitors and switches appear to be original. Potentiometers date to 1997.

Neck & Fretboard

Fingerboard: High-quality Ebony. There is a single hairline crack characteristic of aged ebony on the surface. We have left this as-is to preserve the vintage state, but repair/filling is available upon request after purchase.

Frets/Nut: Previously refretted and renutted. Fret life is approximately 60–70%.

Bridge: Currently equipped with a straight bar bridge. (Upgrade to an Adjusto-Matic is recommended for those seeking finer intonation adjustment).

Condition & Playability

Cosmetics: The binding remains stable without significant deterioration. The body retains a beautiful vintage gloss and features an exceptional "tiger flame" maple grain that shifts with the viewing angle.

Setup: Current string action is approximately 2.8mm (low E) to 2.0mm (high E). As is common with original vintage Gretsch geometry, the action is on the higher side. While perfectly playable as-is, a neck angle adjustment is recommended for players seeking lower action. We have maintained the current angle to prioritize the original structural integrity.

Body End: Evidence of a previous tailpiece modification is visible under the current Bigsby.

Non-original vintage black hard case included.
