We picked up a $50 Gorilla GG-25 practice amp on Reverb and asked a simple question: is it trash or a studio secret weapon?
In this episode of Sh*tty Rigs, we’re making the case for the kinds of amps most players leave behind—the small, cheap practice combos that seem limited on paper but can surprise you in the studio.
On its own, this Gorilla has a very specific thing going on: clipped, brittle, almost fuzzy in a way that feels more like a texture than a traditional "good" tone. It’s not versatile, and you wouldn’t want it as your only amp—but that’s kind of the point.
Where it really works is in context. Blended with something like a Fender Deluxe Reverb, it adds attack and edge to an otherwise full, balanced sound, helping a part cut without feeling layered or over-processed.
It’s a good reminder that not every piece of gear needs to do everything well. Sometimes it just needs to do one thing you can’t get anywhere else.
