Alternative country fans and lovers of unique guitars, rejoice! Jay Farrar, the frontman of Son Volt, has restocked his Reverb shop for the first time since 2018. Head to The Official Jay Farrar of Son Volt Reverb Shop now to check out all the gear he has for sale.

Farrar has been a member of two bands central to the alt-country genre. First, he helped lead the pioneering Uncle Tupelo before forming Son Volt and releasing critically acclaimed records like Trace and Notes of Blue. Over that time, he amassed an extraordinary collection of stringed instruments, including vintage guitars, basses, a dulcimer, and steel guitars. Now, he’s ready to pass some of his gear on.

"This collection runs the gamut from studio stuff to a panoply of live performance gear with a few vintage items in the mix to balance things out," Farrar says. "Some of these pieces 'made the song,' both in the studio and on stage. All were handpicked and driven around the block. If there’s mojo in these, I’m glad to pass it along."

  • A 1959 Fender Dual 8 Stringmaster steel guitar with a blonde finish that comes with the original two-tone brown case
  • An Epiphone Special with mini humbuckers in a Sunburst finish used on the Son Volt song “The Search” and various tours

  • A Gere Inc. dulcimer—a stringed instrument that resembles a zither commonly used in Appalachia—used on the song “Dead Man’s Clothes”
