An exclusive interview from String Catastrophe Magazine
Interviewer: Rex “Chainsaw” Malone, thank you for sitting down with us. We heard you recently sold fourteen vintage amplifiers, a touring van, and allegedly a pet iguana just to buy one guitar?
Rex Malone: First of all, the iguana understood. Second, yes. The Gibson Les Paul Double Cut Goldtop isn’t a guitar. It’s an event. It’s what happens when elegance gets kicked through a saloon window.
Interviewer: Strong opening statement.
Rex Malone: Look at it. That Goldtop finish shines like buried pirate treasure under stage lights. You walk into a club holding that thing and suddenly bartenders stop polishing glasses and drummers sit up straighter. Somewhere, a blues riff forms spontaneously in the atmosphere.
Interviewer: How does it sound?
Rex Malone: Like thunder wearing expensive cologne. The P-90 pickups have this glorious snarl — clean enough for jazz guys pretending they’re sophisticated, but dirty enough to make your neighbor question your moral character. You hit one chord and it’s like the guitar says, “Oh, we’re causing problems tonight.”
Interviewer: You’ve played a lot of guitars over the years. Why this one?
Rex Malone: Most guitars are either racehorses or pickup trucks. The Les Paul Double Cut is somehow both. It’s lightweight, fast, and comfortable — but it still punches like a heavyweight boxer who listens to Little Richard records for motivation.
Interviewer: People say the double cutaway gives better upper fret access.
Rex Malone: Absolutely. Before this guitar, I needed a map, climbing gear, and emotional support just to reach the 22nd fret. Now? Smooth sailing. Solos pour out of this thing like bad decisions after midnight.
Interviewer: Any downsides?
Rex Malone: Yeah. Once you own one, regular guitars feel emotionally unavailable.
Interviewer: Final thoughts for our readers?
Rex Malone: If a regular Les Paul is a classic muscle car, the Double Cut Goldtop is the same car after somebody stuffed nitroglycerin into the engine and drove it through a jukebox. It’s classy chaos. Beautiful danger. The kind of guitar that makes you play louder, smile wider, and accidentally stay at soundcheck for six hours.
And if you hear somebody say, “It’s just another Goldtop,” kindly escort them out of the building before they hurt themselves with their own ignorance.
This 2011 Double cut is a gorgeous guitar. From a collection of a Dell executive, it was very well cared for. As the pictures show it has had a neck sanding to facilitate playability. Very smooth player and absolutely gorgeous sounding P-90's. An extremely sexy guitar. 7 pounds 10 ounces.
Have a wicked good one!
