FGN guitars is the brand name used by Fujigen - a name synonymous with high quality Japanese guitars since the beginning, and the same factory that built vintage Greco's and Ibanez guitars, and still builds the Prestige and J Custom line for Ibanez today, along with other brands.
I can't find any catalogs for FGN from around this era, but based on the Solid Guitar fandom page, this model is made with an lightweight basswood body (this one appears to be 2 piece centre seam), with 1 piece African mahogany neck and Indian rosewood fretboard - although it's hard to tell for sure under the paint, that appears to be the case here, and you can clearly see the white basswood in the pickup cavity, and the orange mahogany truss rod nut route.
Compared to a standard mahogany body SG, this Basswood body is incredibly light - this is by far, the lightest SG I have owned by about a half pound. It floats in the hands. And it rings differently than a Mahogany body SG. It's a little more lively, and brighter - not that a typical SG is unlively or dark.
In terms of fit, finish and quality, this guitar reminds me a lot of the Epiphone LQ series SG.
All FGN brand guitars use the Fujigen proprietary C.F.S. (Circle Fretting System) - which means that the frets are slightly rounded to match the radius of the fretboard, nut and bridge, instead of perfectly perpendicular to the fretboard. This technology is supposed to help with intonation across the entire fretboard. To me, playing it doesn't look or feel any different than a typical SG, so the difference is subtle and you don't have to worry about it feeling off, but it does play extremely well and the C.F.S. technology may be part of that reason.
Everything on this guitar appears to be original, and this guitar is in very good player grade condition. In reality, it's in excellent condition, but there is 1 larger dent in the back of the body. There are multiple minor dings, dents, chips and scratches, and swirling over the entire guitar - and with it being a gloss black guitar, every one of them can be seen - but nothing major that affects the tone or playability, and no signs of a heel or headstock crack or repair.
All of the nickel hardware including the bridge, tailpiece, pickup covers & pole pieces, screws and tuners are all in great shape, with lots of shine left, and only very minor areas of tarnish, pitting, and/or corrosion, but everything works as expected.
The 1 piece mahogany neck is a joy to play on - it is wide, flat and relatively thin. Not quite as thin as a Gibson '61 SG, but not thick either. It has a really nice dark rosewood fretboard, like you'd expect from Fujigen, with really nice acrylic pearloid trapezoid inlays, that have the look of vintage celluloid inlays.
The 22 medium jumbo frets have virtually no visible play wear and look nearly brand new, and overall there is essentially the full life left in these frets, and the guitar plays extremely well up and down the entire neck.
The original humbuckers have a lot of power and punch on tap. They're lower wind coming in at 7.11K for the neck pickup, and 7.83K for the bridge pickup. This difference along with the different colour leads (grey for bridge, and black for neck) leads me to believe they are 2 different models - a slightly underwound neck model (which makes sense). This lower wind keeps them bright and articulate when the volume is all the way up, and when you roll down the volume and tone, and you're able to recreate many tones you're looking for. They are great sounding pickups that can handle most genres really well.
All the guitars I sell, I test, thoroughly clean, and setup completely before I list them. Anything that is missing, damaged, or non original is mentioned in the listing.
I setup all my Gibson style guitars to Gibson factory specs - including neck relief, action, pickup height, intonation, and tailpiece height. So this guitar will be ready to play out of the box (after you tune it up - I ship my guitars with the strings loosened).
Comes with the original FGN banded padded gig bag. This is a great gig bag, with nice pockets, good straps, and proper reinforcement inside.
Overall, this is a high quality professional grade guitar made by one of the best guitar factories in the world.
If you're looking for a Japanese made SG Standard that literally feels like it's floating, grab this one today!
CONDITION ------------
Overall it's in very good player grade shape.
I've tried to capture all of the flaws in the photos and in the description.
Across the entire body, top, back side, neck, and headstock, there are numerous minor dings, dents, scratches, and swirling.
There is a larger dent/ding in the back of the body.
There is a small chip in the finish on the tip of the headstock.
All of the nickel hardware, including the bridge, tailpiece, pickup covers and pole pieces, tuners, and screws are all in great shape with lots of shine still left, with only minor areas of tarnish, pitting, and/or corrosion. Everything works as expected, including the tuners and bridge saddles.
The black plastics are in tact with typical light scratches and pick marks. The rear control panel cover still has the protective plastic in tact.
The bridge volume knob is slightly chipped on the top.
All of the non branded Kluson style tuners are straight and work properly.
Around the strap buttons there's minor strap marks/swirling.
The 22 medium jumbo frets have barely been played, so there is the full life left in these frets, and the guitar plays very well up and down the entire neck.
There's no signs of a headstock, heel or any other repairs.
The truss rod works as expected, with room in both directions.
