Powered vs. Passive Speakers
Unlike their active speaker (or powered speaker) counterparts, which feature a built-in power amp, passive speakers require an external power amp to supply their power.
Why Choose Passive Speakers?
While it means that some extra gear is required for passive speakers to function properly, there are some benefits to going with passive speakers:
- Cost-friendly: Because of the lack of a built-in power supply, passive speakers are generally less expensive than their powered or active speaker cousins.
- Versatility: Without needing to be tethered to an outlet, you can have more control over your passive speaker setup—whether you're placing passive monitors on your studio desk, passive bookshelf speakers around your hi-fi home stereo setup, or passive PA speakers on stage.
- Customization: What power amp you choose to pair with your passive speakers is entirely up to you, which is an extra bit of customization that some people appreciate.
