It’s a passive unit that converts your unbalanced left/right signals into balanced signals via transformer-coupled XLR outputs, all in a pedal-sized enclosure made to sit right on top of your board.It’s especially useful for amp-in-a-box / DSP guitar rigs (like the ACS1), keyboards, or any instrument running L/R outputs. Canvas Stereo combines two essential functions in one device: DI (Direct Injection) and LI (Line Isolator).In DI mode, it’s intended for high-impedance sources (electric guitar, bass, etc.): the signal is reduced by −20 dB (or −35 dB with pad engaged) and converted to balanced, then you use mixer/preamp gain to bring it to the desired level. In LI mode, it’s designed for low-impedance sources (line-level DSP rigs, keys, etc.): the signal remains full level and is converted to balanced, typically requiring less preamp gain.Because it’s passive, you won’t damage anything if you choose the wrong mode, but level and frequency response may be affected.
