Crafted using butyrate bobbins, maple spacers, our special custom spec cast alnico magnets, nickel silver baseplates our new reworked custom nickel silver covers. In order to use specific alloys the slugs, keeper bar, and pole screws are all custom manufactured. Coils are wound with specially selected plain enamel wire sorted from many spools to find wire of a specific diameter and resistance.

Continuous experimentation over the past decade has resulted in the unique alnico used in the "Top Shelf Custom" model pickups. Adjusting raw material ratios and even adding materials not typically used in the production of standard alnico grades in an effort to approximate the impure raw materials used in the 1950s. "Custom alnico" is the result of years of testing, thousands of magnets and considerable cost. Designated "Custom" alnico since it doesn't correspond to any standard alnico grade. It's a fairly weak magnet closer in strength to alnico 3 than any other.

The result is a PAF style pickup with clarity and tone rivaling the sound of a single coil. Immediately noticeable is the lack of compression normally attributed to humbucker pickups especially those using more powerful magnets. This absence of compression allows for an organic clarity like that found in only the best vintage PAF pickups.

Due to the magnet's low strength sustain and "bloom" is pronounced. When combined with offset low wind count coils the final result is a truly vintage sounding pickup. Listen to the "Top Shelf Custom" pickups on the Doug & Pat show #6 humbucker shootout and decide for yourself.

Although nuances like tonal harmonics, note bloom, and "in the room" clarity are not represented well on any YouTube video (Doug refers to this in passing) you can still hear a distinct difference in the "Top Shelf Custom" pickups.
