JMP 2203 – 1979 Master Model 100 Watt Lead
Fully Serviced
A superb early-1979 example of the iconic Marshall JMP 2203 Master Model Lead, built during what many enthusiasts consider the golden era of Marshall amplification. Combining the unmistakable authority of a 100-watt Super Lead with the convenience of a master volume circuit, the 2203 quickly became the benchmark for hard rock and heavy metal throughout the late ’70s and ’80s.
This particular amplifier is an especially desirable example, retaining all of its original transformers and choke (“original iron”), a key feature for collectors and players alike. Original iron is one of the biggest contributors to the authentic feel and unmistakable voice of a vintage Marshall, making untouched examples like this increasingly difficult to find.

Tone
The late-‘70s 2203 represents one of the finest periods in Marshall’s history. It delivers huge, authoritative clean headroom before seamlessly transitioning into thick, harmonically rich overdrive with exceptional clarity and punch.
Compared to later JCM800 models, these JMP-era amplifiers have a slightly warmer, more organic character while retaining the aggressive attack that made the 2203 legendary. Chords remain incredibly articulate, lead lines sustain effortlessly and the amplifier responds beautifully to picking dynamics and the guitar’s volume control.
With the gain turned up, you’ll hear the unmistakable sound behind countless classic rock, NWOBHM and early metal records. Add a boost pedal and it easily reaches the saturated tones that continue to inspire players nearly half a century later.
The fact that this amplifier retains its original iron only enhances its desirability, preserving the character, feel and response that collectors and professional players seek from an original late-’70s Marshall.
Condition
A lovely vintage example showing honest cosmetic wear consistent with nearly five decades of use. The amplifier has retained its original character and presents exactly as you’d hope for a well-cared-for JMP from this period.
Importantly, it still retains its original transformers and choke, making it an increasingly rare find in today’s vintage market.
