The Gibson CS-336 is a high-end semi-hollow electric guitar built by Gibson's Custom, Art & Historic division. Introduced in 2001, it features an innovative "tonally carved" design—where the back, sides, and center block are all carved from a single piece of mahogany—to deliver tones bridging a Les Paul and an ES-335.
While visually similar to Gibson Custom’s ES™ models, the CS-336 Figured Top is constructed with carved and chambered solid woods for a sound all its own that combines elements of archtop, Les Paul™, and semi-hollowbody tones. The compact body shape is well balanced and resists feedback while remaining extremely resonant. The sound is captured by a pair of ’57 Classic™ humbucking pickups.
I never got on with the ES-335, it just felt too big, perhaps because I mainly play telecasters. I felt much more comfortable with this more compact and still very resonant and responsive model. Selling now unfortunately because I am downsizing and will not have enough room to keep it. But it is a beauty with its flame maple top. The body is very resonant and the slim neck is very comfortable.
The guitar was bought in 2004 and has spent most of its life in its fitted hard shell case, apart from a few polite swing band gigs and rehearsals. There is some tarnish on the metal hardware to be expected for a guitar of this age (over 20 years old) most of which I have cleaned off. There is a flaw in the surface of the finish which runs along the top and down the left edge of the headstock which is cosmetic and has no impact on the guitar function or playability, otherwise the condition would be classed as excellent. There are a few finish blemishes and a ding in the front face of the headstock and one on the rear of the neck at about the 3rd fret. All to be expected in a lightly used instrument of this age. The 6 last photos are closeups of these blemishes.
Key Features:
- Body: Scaled-down ES-335 shape, utilizing a chambered one-piece mahogany back with a beautiful solid carved flame maple top.
- Neck: Slim-tapered 1960s profile made of mahogany, capped with a bound rosewood fingerboard.
- Electronics & Hardware: Equipped with dual '57 Classic humbuckers, an ABR-1 bridge, and a stopbar tailpiece for vintage PAF-style tones.
- Ergonomics: Highly resonant but exceptionally lightweight (typically around 6.5 to 7.2 lbs), making it ideal for players who want ES-style warmth without the bulk
