Comments:

The Gibson Marauder (often referred to as the M-1) was introduced in 1974 as a "budget" entry designed to compete with the bolt-on neck market dominated by Fender. Gibson collaborated with legendary designer Bill Lawrence to create a guitar with a Les Paul-shaped body but with tonal characteristics closer to a Telecaster or Stratocaster. The model was heavily endorsed by Ace Frehley and Paul Stanley of KISS. Stanley famously used Marauders as his "sacrificial" guitars, smashing them at the end of every show. Other players include Pete Shelley (Buzzcocks) and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth). Despite the marketing push, only 7,111 units were sold between 1975 and 1979 before it was officially discontinued in 1980.Gibson switched the design to a rotary "blender" knob in 1976 to give players more tonal variety, so the 3-way toggle is a hallmark of the original launch spec. These early versions are often preferred by collectors because the toggle switch feels more "Gibson-standard" than the later experimental electronics.
