Before speaker IRs were a thing, boxes like this were used to direct-inject an amplified guitar signal without having to set up a microphone. It's an analog modelling device that uses filter circuits to replicate the sound of a 12-inch guitar speaker.

You can connect the device either to an instrument-level output (eg from a preamp) or to a spare speaker output (IMPORTANT - it is essential to also connect a speaker or dummy load to a valve amp, and strongly recommended with a solid state amp). There is a switch to set the input level, and switches for Ground Lift (to eliminate potential hum loops) and Dark/Brite (simulating the mic being on or off centre of the speaker cone).

Runs from a PP3 9V battery (not included) or phantom power.
