1974 Guild D-50 Bluegrass Special – Vintage Acoustic

Presented here is a beautifully preserved 1974 Guild D-50 Bluegrass Special, an outstanding example of one of Guild’s most celebrated dreadnoughts. Built during the company’s golden era in Westerly, Rhode Island, this instrument represents the craftsmanship and tonal character that made the D-50 a genuine rival to the finest American acoustics of the period.

The specification is classic Guild: a select solid spruce top paired with solid rosewood back and sides, a mahogany neck with a comfortable, rounded profile, and an ebony fingerboard and bridge. The top has aged gracefully, developing the rich colour and sensitivity that only decades of natural resonance can produce. The rosewood is particularly striking—dark, straight-grained and beautifully figured. While Brazilian rosewood had been discontinued by 1968, this set has the visual elegance that often causes a double-take; the photos tell the story.

Tonally, this guitar is everything a seasoned player hopes for in a vintage D-50. It offers powerful dreadnought projection with a clear, piano-like low end, a strong and articulate midrange, and a shimmering, open treble response. The dynamic range is exceptional, equally rewarding for flatpicking, vocal accompaniment and expressive fingerstyle work. It is a mature, balanced instrument with that unmistakable Westerly resonance—bold when you dig in, warm and responsive when you play with a lighter touch.

The guitar plays very well as set up. The frets are in excellent condition, the action sits at a comfortable medium height, and there is ample saddle and neck relief available should the next owner prefer to take it lower. It is structurally sound, clean throughout, and an impressively well-kept 51-year-old instrument.

Sold with a high-quality Hiscox hardshell case, fully gig-ready.

A superb vintage Guild and an inspiring dreadnought for the serious player or collector.
