Born in Madrid in 1926, Manuel Contreras Sr. joined the Ramirez workshop as a master luthier in 1959. It was Contreras who made the first José Ramirez guitar Andrés Segovia bought in 1960. After three years with Ramirez, Manuel opened his own guitar workshop in the center of Madrid. He soon earned a reputation as one of the finest and most innovative luthiers in Spain.
His son Pablo Manuel Contreras (1957-2011) later joined him and also became a renowned luthier. The Orfeo magazine No. 3 honours the two of them in an excellent and very detailed article.
This fantastic classical guitar was built by Manuel Contreras Jr. in 1996. It contains a dedication to his friend Luis Alberto Hernandez.
This Manuel Contreras Jr. is a fantastic example of the great quality of Contreras guitars. Being very loud and lively, this guitar is great fun to play and the sound is characteristic of the Madrid style. It is focused, rich and extremly expressive.
The action and setup are comfortable and fast. As is typical of Contreras, the quality of materials is exquisite. The condition is good for its age – the guitar shows some signs of use and play.
A great concert-level classical guitar at a very affordable price, which comes with a new case.
