Both units have been re-capped and serviced to spec. in the UK.
We've added a unique modification that gives independent control over threshold and gain via the front panel (see photo).
TAB U73b has valve circuitry and feed-forward compression designed for full frequency programme mastering, similar to the legendary Fairchild 660 / 670.
The U73b is a three stage push/push variable mu design with a theoretical compression ratio of 100 to 1. It is the fastest tube compressor ever built due to its forward triggered side chain. In Europe it was heavily used as a mastering compressor for disk cutting lathes. The secret ingredient of the desirable sound quality of vinyl. Over 90% of all records released from 1960 to 1980 were mastered through a pair of Telefunken U73 compressor limiters.
When it comes to adding the best valve compression to your productions, a balanced pair of U73b's is the sensible option and substantially cheaper than a Fairchild. TAB made 3 models for Telefunken and the desirable 'b' model has the most user controls and produces the best sound. You don't need visual metering, just use your ears.
WEIGHT: 5 kg (11 lbs) per unit.
CABLES: 2 sets of IEC power cable with XLR input & XLR output tails, soldered to a TAB ten pin connector that slots into the back of the U73b.
POWER: These units sound best on European voltage (220 V AC) . A suitable stepdown transformer (240V to 220V) is included at no extra cost.
VINTAGE EQUIPMENT RACKS
Listed separately, two Telefunken equipment racks with ten slots each - not included in this listing. One comes with a wired XLR patchbay. See separate listing 'Vintage TAB Telefunken equipment rack'
