Introducing my newly designed Wide Range Humbucker. The core concept is to get the absolute most out of the pickup routs in our guitars by expanding the aperture of these pickups. That is where I began with the Wide Range Humbucker, by removing the cover and making larger bobbins, but it turned into something more. If I said, “the Wide Range Humbucker is highly flawed”, many of you would agree that the modern ones that come stock in Fender and Squier guitars are built wrong: they are made with traditional humbucker parts in a Wide Range Humbucker cover which not only sounds wrong but they also sound bad (the magnetic field shape is wrong and the bobbins are too small resulting in the coils being too far apart and a lot of space under the cover). However, I propose that even the original Wide Range Humbucker could be one of the best tones available but it never reached its full potential.

The Wide Range Humbucker is larger than a traditional humbucker which means that it can sound bigger (aperture) and uses rod magnets instead of steel polepieces and a bar magnet so it can be more responsive AND there are more magnetic fields and a wider magnetic aperture. I approached this redesign with that exact mindset and made a completely new pickup to fit in the Wide Range Humbucker rout: wider and taller fiberboard bobbins built on alnico rod magnets, without the steel “reflector plate”, wound with thick ass wire. Essentially, it’s two under-wound Strat bobbins (but bigger) wired in series for a fat, snappy tone that’s smooth and shimmery. I introduce the new Stonewall Pickups Wide Range Humbucker: one of the best tones available for electric guitar.

Since these pickups have two coils each, the tone can be wound and customized in any number of ways: lower output, higher output, XFR, etc. Let me know if you want something special.

Pickguard material for tops as the aesthetic; currently I have tortoiseshell, white, parchment, cream, and black. The coil is wrapped in string for protection (white, off-white, or black string). These will not fit inside metal covers. The two bobbins combined are the same size as a cover. This allows me to expand the aperture for a bigger tone than traditional Wide Range Humbuckers. It was a tonal consideration, not an aesthetic consideration.

All Stonewall Pickups are hand-wound (scatter-wound). When a coil is machine-wound, each turn of the wire lies directly next to the previous turn. This creates a muddy tone. If you've never owned hand-wound pickups, you are in for a treat: the clarity of tone and frequency response really comes through. Very open sounding with great string-to-string definition. Stonewall Pickups also have unmatched dynamics.

All Stonewall Pickups are vacuum wax potted to prevent microphonics. If you would prefer your pickups to not be potted (noisy but my favorite for recording), be sure to mention it when we email you regarding your pickup options.
