This is a circa 1840-1850 "Stauffer school”, Vienna Guitar. Probably made in Vienna, Austria (no markings or stamps inside). Guitars from this era are often called Romantic guitars. It’s in its original wood coffin case.

It plays beautifully, the result of recent restoration and set up. Light as a feather – floats in your hands. Great intonation, anywhere on the fretboard. Excellent, full tone. This guitar is to play. Action is good, just right for classical style.

You can hear this guitar being played in the sound/video clip under the selected photos.

Recent work includes:

• Tuning peg holes re-drilled, and replaced into head

• Ebony veneer on top of headstock replaced in that process

• To achieve better intonation, saddle slot was re-cut and original wire saddle was moved back slightly.

There are several cracks on top, all cleated and stable.

No cracks at all on back and sides.

Years ago, finish on top was oversprayed, but it’s already worn to achieve a look consistent with the instrument.

Original very thin French polish on maple back, and sides.

Original ebonized fretboard, pearwood or similar

The MOP fretboard inlay on the 7th fret position is original to the guitar.

Original Floating fingerboard extension over body

Spruce top

Scale: 616mm

In its original wood coffin case. The fabric liner in the case was replaced with a modern fabric (probably 20 years ago or more) consistent in color and style with the original.
