A rare example of a solid maple Hondo II H732ML electric guitar.
Newly set up and in pristine condition. The frets have also been levelled and polished.
I will include a used but nice condition Fender guitar bag.
These beauties were made in the Japan and later in Korea (Samick factory) between 1980-81.
Hondo was one of the first overseas guitar builders to feature American-built pickups on the import instruments beginning in 1978.
These have a Gibson style headstocks but I suppose are Les Paul inspired, and are not cheap copies and I think given the solid woods people are paying more attention to them now when you can find the nice examples.
This is a less common variant which looks a bit like a Westone Thunder with a beautiful solid maple body which is near perfect, not to mention the lovely grain and striking strait-through mahogany sections that give great contrast.
The wood colour is not quite as dark as in the main pic , I pictured with a purple background for different lighting but I guess somewhere between the two shades as with Westone Thunder and other solid maple guItars you will have an idea of what these look these look like in the flesh but I have to say again this really is a beautiful example.
Aside form two tiny micro-dings this is the best example of an early Hondo guitar I have ever seen. *one small ding on the back of the neck midway down that you can feel slightly that's literarily the main offender.
It's all original (bar perhaps the dials) and the chrome wear is shinny like new with no pitting or corrosion. Only one tiny dimple in the bridge end pick up cover otherwise they are perfect and any marks are just reflection!
The frets are all perfect and were recently polished and levelled, all the electrics work as they should and each channel is clean with great output and volume with a nice selection if you want a bit of grit in your playing.
A very rare chance to find one of these before the prices soar like some of the Westone Thunders and Matsumoku guitars.
Action is set at medium around 2.7mm on the 12th but still easy to bar chords but you get a good amount or sustain and projection not going too low on these. Truss rod at the headstock end for necessary adjustments.
I found an interesting review of this guitar (youtube attached) spot on comments except this is NOT plywood, the chap just means because it has sections of "solid" woods rather that one piece - but interesting talk about how some of these are very nice examples and maybe Westone Thunders were perhaps more consistent. Nice words about the rosewood fretboards on these which were better quality back in the day or only found now on expensive Gibsons etc.
I can say that this is a very good example and is as you can see solid maple! with mahogany strike-throughs. I love the contracting maple grain pattens that you only find in nature.
I would agree with the review that the tuners on these are not the best but they hold tune and do the job, I guess it's the one thing to swap out if you wanted to upgrade to Klusons, the pick up's are great! and all the chrome hardware is top notch.
Perfect for Rock N' Roll and punk and blues and have a sort of Les Paul sound and feel going on.
