The Korg PME-40X is a vintage floor-mounted modular multi-effects pedalboard released by Korg in 1983. [1, 2]Designed in Japan by Hiroaki Nishijima, the system lets musicians slide up to four interchangeable analog effect modules into a single powered chassis.
How It Works
- Chassis Design: The main board manages power (using internal 15-volt rails) and internal signal routing without requiring patch cables or multiple adapters.
- Signal Bypass: The system routes instrument signals only through active modules to preserve tonal integrity and reduce noise.
- Controls: Each slot has a dedicated footswitch, complemented by a master bypass (all-pass) switch.
The Cartridge SystemKorg produced 15 total cartridges for the PME series (including a blank "Filler Box"). Notable modules include:
- Octave V (KOT-401): An analog octave pedal with one/two octaves down, octave up, dry slider, and distortion.
- Wave Shaper (KWS-301): A unique fuzz circuit that morphs output waveforms with a mids boost.
- Dist Wah: A dirty envelope filter.
- Other Modules: Chorus devices, overdrive, flasher, phaser, and digital delay.
