This microphone has been professionally modified by renowned technician Dave Way at Funky Junk to capture the highly sought-after character of an original vintage 1970s Neumann U87.

The mod is very simple and well known among pro recording engineers, and in the incredibly rare case that this isn’t desirable, it’s easily reversible by an experienced microphone technician such as Dave Way at Funky Junk.

What the mod does…

Removes modern restriction:

The modern factory circuit includes component configurations designed to lower noise floor and increase output, but this can make the mic sound slightly "stiff," modern, and clinical.

Vintage circuit restoration:

By removing these modern filtering and feedback components, the circuit is restored to a classic, vintage specification.

The sonic result:

The microphone sounds significantly more open, airy, and three-dimensional with a smoother top end and faster transient response.

Note:

Because this mod opens up the microphone's natural frequency response and removes modern dampening, it exhibits the true-to-era characteristics of a vintage U87—including a slightly higher natural noise floor compared to a stock modern unit.
