"To the brilliance of the 103, the garland adds real projection and depth."
A powerful, rich-sounding Alexander 103GBL with nickel silver garland bell

[Overview]
Alexander F/Bb full double French horn, Model 103. Gold brass. Detachable bell, fitted with nickel silver garland. Lacquer finish. Made circa 1992. Accessories: used semi-hard case (worn handle, broken zipper on the case's rear accessory pocket). New price: 2,475,000 yen.

[Condition]
Small, shallow dents scattered across the bell flare, all corrected. Evidence of a corrected distortion around the bell body's outer edge. Lacquer loss on the rotary levers, the curves of the various slides, the area where the left hand rests, and the inner bell. Rotary valves disassembled and cleaned, bore cleaned, soft parts replaced, and serviced/adjusted throughout.

[Features]
The Alexander 103 has remained the de facto standard full double horn beloved by players worldwide. Since its introduction in 1909, its fundamental design has changed very little, even as it has reflected the materials and manufacturing precision of each era - and it remains a top-tier choice today.

This particular 103 was built around 1992, with a gold brass body and a bell fitted with a nickel silver garland. It carries the same garland - the ornamental floral engraving - found on the 200th-anniversary model, giving it a presence that sets it apart from a standard 103.

The bell flare weighs in at 510 grams, measured. That's noticeably heavier than a typical 103 bell, and combined with the nickel silver garland at the bell's edge, it improves the horn's projection. Even when played forcefully, the tone stays composed rather than getting unruly, tempering any metallic harshness while still delivering plenty of volume.

The 103's characteristic brilliance is toned down slightly here, and in exchange the sound gains thickness and cohesion. It blends easily with horns from other makers, settling naturally into an orchestra or ensemble while still projecting firmly forward when it needs to. A genuinely appealing horn that adds the stability and depth of a garland bell to the everyday practicality of the standard 103.
