About Guitar Outpost Plus & Vintage Parts

Guitar Out Post Plus Has been on the web about 16 yrs. under a different name early on.It carried the same Name as Our 4 music stores. We also had a Sound Rental & install co. for weekend warriors to A large system for coliseums. And a favorite, the only music museum in our state & it drew people,a lot of players from Nashville etc. An accident,& we had to close our shop.
We are different in that most publish specs.Question? Has anyone ever heard a spec? Heck no! Always think of your ears as Sonic Taste Buds. Back your hormones off if you get overexcited, and most importantly add the key ingredient-YOUR HEART and SOUL- If a good salesman gets you real excited,-he has probably asked you some questions ....LIKE -What KIND of music do you like and whats your favorite bands ? Now he has you eating out of his hand, because as bad as or good as the amp, guitar ,pedal{S} you are trying out--He will dial in that sound or as close as he can get, and especially if you are a male , Your testosterone flies off the scale. Later at home you try to find sounds of other guys--and you get frustrated. Our stores were open 32 yrs.with me being 19 & starting w/$1000 & 10 good guitars. (9 yrs.classical training, 6th grade found me digging out dad's Gibson like Robert Johnson's,serial # about 6 months apart. & we had this furniture stereo that had a mic input. It was tube powered, I would put the old Astatic mic in the Gibson & crank it and it would distort. 6-8 weeks later & we had to go search for a spkr. .A regular event.By 14 I was teaching publicly, playing small tours, doing Southern Gospel gigs warming up the big guys. I also would do mini tours running sound. Dad taught me to drive at 8,gave me the keys at 15 & a Smith & Wesson. What do you think a Marine sniper would give his son? Well,a little later a 1911 .45 Colt.
So I got out of southern gospel for Rock and Roll & found some guys who played. I found myself playing with guys sometimes 3x my age but those kind of guys draw their age group ladies.Started my own band in 10th grade & we practiced 2-4 nites a week & gigged 2-3 times a weekend. & a girl talked me into taking college music theory-enuff.the prof.found I had perfect pitch.I am still blessed w/great ears & I get paid weekly as a sound engineer.
Our 1st store in a town of 2000 people broke all the molds.WE were the first dealer statewide to bring in the best & most famous lines today. We were the 1st retail dealer for DR. Z. Boy that amp sucked. Hats off to him for making it big, His amps took off after the guru of boutique amps gave him one of his personal designs. Our amp had three treble controls named hi, mid, bass/ wrong freq. ,screech, and screeechier ,ahem abrasive treble & super earbleed... 10 minutes of this ear bleeder called prescence & if anyone was present, it made everyone so irritated, they wanted to fight-that was with the LP. If you used a Strat ,all tone controls had to be turned onto ZERO so shots wouldn't go forth. This was a redneck hick town & what they didn't like, they shot at, 3ish miles down the road, just across the county line, & seriously ,there were many bullet holes evident in that club.Turn the screech to 0 & use a L.P. & you could stand it. No way anyone could play a strat thru
it. We had White Snake & many other greats come. & we were right on the 4 lane from Memphis to the Gulf coast. People would pull up to the red light & see a 8ft. black LP on a yellow backlit sign 15 feet up & somebody like Crosby,Stills,Nash would park their bus. We got noticed for doing over a million bucks in business one year in the early '80's in a town of 2000 people. Our retail prices were dictated by what we paid. My first 1 day vintage show I took 17 pieces, that still had our retail tags on them from the store and dealers were lining up to pay our retail. Three were technically bought by Jimmy Wallace, See[Jimmy Wallace LP}who wrote me a check & said that the Famous Tom Murphy would vouch & guarantee cash . 3 hours from end of show,Tom comes over & says ,I can't get anyone to loan me cash to pay you.Checks are not used. We had talked a bit before and now more.Tom walked. He said their still yours. Pak em and run boys. And we had some super rare finds always. I can't say enough for guys like that that stood on truth and guided me. And I still have a good relationship with Jimmy Wallace since then. We ended up doing a phone deal. Late last year, he bought a 1961 Custom Strat, the real deal. Most of everything we did,I did, as dad had taught me so much.I was spraying guitars, etc, learning from painting my 1966 GTO, > That little town of poor people didn't have a lot of money but they had things-like a Harley Davidson.A Ninja,a Honda V65 Magna.-and that beautiful 1972 Big Block Corvette w Lake pipes I re-did the finish on,several boats,& a RC airplane which my employee totaled before I got out side. That was the start of the many 1000's of good times we always had. And we stayed in biz when MARRS music came and went,& others. Everybody moved close to us to suck away some of our business, but it worked the other way. They all left town or went out of business. Then gtr.Cntr. came and we stayed & stayed & they would bring their district mgrs. over, new employees over--I never returned their visits. We stayed until The accident & all the other music stores left are having a rough time. So this is what we do now. And we usually don't get in a hurry to list. If I wanted to work that hard, I would open a store. People come 100+ miles for me to do their set ups, relic, restore etc. Its nice I get to spend time w people and play & have good times. Those 13 year old kids I used to sell them a gtr. & amp for a $5.00 a week payment, they have all grown up. Judge,Lawyers,Professors, Special Forces-Pastors and a few famous guys you have listened to &employees. Its great.
And I have been developing a whole new part of me w/God's Help-So the next 50 years I am looking forward to. The accident{s} I took one bullet in the femoral artery in the thigh & it went down to my ankle.Usually you might live 10 minutes.God & I waited 2.5 hrs. to get to the OR Table. Don't be an adrenaline junkie as I have about 80 documented times I coulda/shoulda died. And find God & You will find real music-You will get greatly inspired by the one who invented music. See Ya at the cartoon show...............I apologize we haven't listed a lot of things it seems,I am building 7 guitars. But some times we list items and they sell as fast as we put them on Reverb. I still price with a decent profit- not the most someone will pay ,just a good decent profit unless I am really disappointed in something- then I near give it away.
When I walk into certain shops, they speak,I go behind the counters and look & I look over at a sales man , he comes over, I point and say $150 for that one.70 for that one,595 for that one and 165 for that one. And 5+ gtrs are bought in 10 minutes. No haggling. And they often throw in free gig bags or a hard case. Like I said- buy from the heart and soul, the same way you should play. If you learn to play that way, great Improv is what shows up & you don't sound like a copy cat, & ( U should do that some also ) original riffs, blistering fast leads, or very slow 8 note leads, if you don't focus so much on being 1 of the fastest neighborhood guitar players, & sound like all the sweep pickers, and you learn to reach down into your gut , ( Spirit ) , what you play will be remembered. All the scales you can learn -seldom fit songs, so devote time to learning to reach inside. You will be an original, and thats whats missing today. Hendrix didn't know the names of every scale- neither did the next 100,000 famous & semi-famous guitar players. I am not against scales at all. I had 9 years of classical scales, & I was fortunate to take lessons on a huge Pipe Organ, that had a foot bass pedal board the width of the organ, so I learned to used both left and right feet for the scale bass lines, after having had 6 years of classical piano & scales. So when I started playing guitar at 12 full time, scales were more natural than brushing my teeth.
Just don't copy to much, and become your own person/player with original ideas. When I get asked to play a gig, its primarily because I can play leads & fills that are original,& its songs I have never heard & they do not tell me the key-ever. Its a flow & I hunt for the heart of the song & play it. If that sounds like too much, its actually just trust. Today I can take a guy and have him playing lead in 3-5, 30 minute lessons. Its another reason to open your mind up to that inward leading. Never forget to have fun, that is a big key. Thanks if you read all of this. I will continue to bring Bargains to Reverb. I have about 10 I need to list, 500+ parts, amps, pedals etc. Thank you for your continued support. And you don't have to buy anything to ask me a question. My answers are free.
