When it comes to warmup routines, what Ariel Posen stresses the most are fundamentals. For one, practicing with a metronome is absolutely non-negotiable. Playing to a metronome keeps you honest, in-time, and truly improving as a dynamic player.
Another tenet of Posen's routine is trimming the fat. As both Ariel and Joe discuss in the video above, guitar players are taught the fundamentals by their go-to shapes. But Posen suggests that players consciously examine the innards of those shapes, cutting out what's unnecessary and learning how to play and manipulate the parts that make up the whole.
For all of this and more, check out the video above to see Ariel break down his routine on his Suhr Classic S SSS, and then stick around to hear what Joe learned after a week spent warming up like Ariel Posen.
Ariel Posen's new album, Headway, arrives March 5. Order the record or pre-save it for streaming ahead of its release.
