Find of the Week: A Semie Moseley-Built Joe Maphis Custom

Today's Find of the Week is definitely a special one—not just another super clean example of a vintage guitar model we all love to ogle.

While this is an ogle-worthy vintage guitar, it's almost a guarantee that you've never laid eyes on it before. That's because it's a one-of-a-kind Joe Maphis Custom handmade by Mosrite founder and luthier Semie Moseley.

According to the listing, this guitar was commissioned in 1986—the same year that country player Joe Maphis died and Mosrite released what would be its last production run of Maphis signature instruments (the double-neck JM 65). This model was inspired by a different, earlier Maphis model, the 1966 Mosrite Joe Maphis Model 1, which featured a spruce top with a walnut back and standard Mosrite hardware, appointments, and features.

But this Joe Maphis Custom model—built for Moseley's friend Ross Coan Jr.—got some special upgrades. It sports a birdseye/blister maple top with a figured walnut back and handmade split-coil humbuckers. It features a bound headstock with Grover imperial tuners and sterling silver inlays on the fretboard and headstock.

To make it even more personal, Moseley stamped Coan's name and date of birth into the fretboard and signed the back of the headstock, which reads "Handmade for Ross Coan Jr. by Semie Moseley 1986."

This special guitar has a great history, looks super cool, and appears to be in fully working condition with just a few signs of wear. Be sure to check out the full listing for details and to make your offer.
