Bass Walk of the Week: Paul Chambers on "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top"

When we kicked off the Bass Walk of the Week series back in January, Jake Hawrylak started by teaching Paul Chambers' part on the track "So What" by Miles Davis.

Today, Jake is revisiting another of the legend's parts—this time, his playing on "The Surrey With the Fringe on Top" from the 1943 musical Oklahoma!, as reimagined by the Wynton Kelly Trio with Wes Montgomery on their album Smokin' at the Half Note.

Rather than break down the whole song, Jake is zeroing in on an eight-measure section right before the solo. The real lesson Jake's teaching today is how bassists can play dynamically around one chord, as Chambers does around a Bb in this section. In the last two measures of the song, there's a quick turnaround—a C minor to F7—before resolving back to the Bb.

Be sure to grab your bass and follow along with the full lesson above, and stay tuned for another bass lesson next week on Reverb.
