As we researched this guitar, there is a lot of interesting history and back story to this line of instruments. Depending on what you read, comparable new guitars of this level of build quality and materials are >$5K, but the Hernandis Model 1 could be bought new in the early seventies for a couple hundred bucks. Also somewhat unclear is where the actual final assembly took place.

All that aside, the Antonio Hernandis Model 1 is a true Classical Guitar both in materials and execution. And with 50+ years on it's side it has a rich, dimensional tone and strong volume that only time and good wood can provide. The action of the steel reinforced neck is right where it should be for traditional Classical action (.110 - .120) at the 12th fret.

The bridge was re-set (date unknown) and while the positioning is a hair off, the intonation and playing is unaffected. Feel free to research the history of Antonio Hernandis and draw your own conclusions. But wherever you land on the history, it represents and excellent value for an all solid-wood classical guitar.

This Model 1 features:

  • Solid Cedar top
  • Spanish Cedar (Mahogany) neck, steel reinforced
  • Rosewood back and sides
  • Spanish heel neck joint
  • Ebony fretboard
  • 19 frets
  • Rosewood bridge (previously re-set)
  • 2.0" nut width
  • 25.98" Scale
  • Made in Madrid, Spain (possibly)
