Purchased new from Avatar back around 2007-2010 (I can’t find the original email receipt). 160 watts (4 ohms mono) of transparent, clean, loud volume. It was mostly played in a church setting and never toured or spent any significant time outside of an air-conditioned environment. It has literally sat unused in a spare (air-conditioned) bedroom/music room for the last 10-12 years. Small minor tears and scratches to the tolex. No tears in the grill cloth. Speakers are in fantastic condition.
Was originally wired as a stereo 8 ohm closed-back cabinet. Was converted to (and is currently wired as) 4 ohms mono with option to switch between open and closed back, depending on the preference for the style or setting. If you would prefer it to be wired back to stereo 8 ohms (80 watts per side) or even as 8 ohm mono (160 watts total), we can do that.
The Celestion Classic Lead 80 (often called the CL80) is a popular 12-inch guitar speaker introduced in the 1980s. It handles high power (80 watts) and gives a clear, balanced sound. Lead guitarists love it because single notes punch through a loud mix without sounding harsh. (I chose it for use with modeling amps as I wanted the models to have a neutral foundation and let the character of the amps to shine without drastic speaker tone coloration.)
Key Features
Big Power: It can handle high-gain amps easily without breaking a sweat.
Clear Mids and Highs: It has a "Hi-Fi" feel. It does not have the harsh 2 kHz spike that other rock speakers have.
Strong Bass: It keeps a tight, punchy low-end even when you play loud.
Tone and Comparison
Think of it like a studio monitor for your guitar. The CL80 is very neutral. It faithfully recreates exactly what your amplifier is sending it. This is very different from the popular Celestion Vintage 30 speaker, which pushes the middle frequencies forward for an aggressive rock crunch. The CL80 is smoother and less "spiky."
Music Styles: Great for hard rock, jazz, metal, and blues. It is loved by players who need every note to be clear in a complex chord.
