This little monster is one serious ROCK AXE! You can see that is was played a lot... and then some! Refinished in TV Yellow by none other then Angelo from Panucci it shows playwear, checks, dings, dongs, marks, scratches, chips etc. etc. It has a super sweet feeling neck that is chunky with a hint of a V, nice low action, powerful P90, lively and resonant, 3.58Kg tonewood that feels like a Burst when strapped around your neck. And oh yes, we almost forgot: it rocks like crazy!!
The Junior is a very versatile instrument that has it all: When played at maximum volume levels it is loud and aggressive and a mean, pure rock machine. Hit that chord and you will hear that full blown 50's P90 rock tone. When played at low volume levels though, it sounds so sweet you cannot believe it can do that. Roll back the tone and it sounds nice and jazzy and produces a warm 50's sound. Very kind and gentle. Roll back the volume and tone and you're in that "Cream" woman tone territory.
This Junior is a vibrant instrument that has a massive tone - very resonant and clear when played unplugged. The neck is very comfortable to play and the guitar feels like it's been with you all your life.
When the previous owner bought it almostr 10 years ago, this was an ugly refinished 1954 Les Paul Junior that was desperately in need of some TLC.
In April 2018, Joe Dobson from Joseph Kaye Guitars - The London Workshop, performed the following restoration work: he fixed the neck joint by resetting it to the perfect angle using original hide glue. After the reset the guitar was carefully stripped from the old refin to start with a clean sheet. The original 50’s bridge post had been moved back as these early Juniors had them placed too close to the pickup. The old wood filler was removed and the old post holes were merged into a new proper routing. These were filled with a piece of real old Honduras mahogany, tapped and glued into place with hide glue. Then the correct intonation was measured once more, new post holes were drilled and the original 50's bushings and post studs were placed back into the correct position. Now the intonation and position of the bridge posts is spot on perfect. Then the original P90 pickup was repaired, coil rewound with original 50's 42AWG plain enamel copper wire, original long rough cast magnets placed back and a new lead wire attached, all in original 50's style. After all work was done the missing 12th and 20th dot markers were replaced and the guitar was refinished in natural nitro.
In 2020 the owner decided to have the guitar refinished in TV Yellow by Angelo van Merrienboer from Panucci. In the pickup- and pots cavity and in the grain there seemed remnants of a limed mahogany TV Yellow finish and it was most likely that this was the original color when this guitar was delivered from the Gibson Factory back in 1954. Angelo did a steller job, as per usual.
Original are the 1954 Les Paul Junior body, P90 pickup and dogear pickup cover that has some lacquer over it, original 1954 lightweight short seam wrapove tailpiece (!), thick early version of the pickguard, trussrod cover, strap pins and Grey Tiger red stripe capacitor. The wiring loom and pots are from a 1960 Les Paul Junior with one Centralab 500K BA811-1831 1346043 (Centralab 1960 week 43) and one 250K BA811-1831 1346041 (Centralab 1960 week 41) pot and includes the original Switchcraft jack, knob pointers and braided wire. The tuners are a St.Helens 3-on-a-plate "Kluson" aged repro set and 10.1mm adapter bushings, the pots cover plate and jack output plate are handmade 3-ply B/W/B plates from 50's nitro celluloid, the black bonnet hat knobs are high end aged repro's. The serial number is restamped with original Gibson 50's font. The neck is a nice big handful with a hint of a V and pearl dot inlays in a beautiful dark RW fretboard. The neck feels smooth and is very easy to play up and down.
All in all it is a killer sounding and looking 1954 Les Paul TV junior that was refinished and restored to a real beast, ready to rock the stages for not even half the price of an all original collectors Junior! Comes in a brand new Bees In A Jar 50's vintage style rectangular case with pink plush lining.
