1960 Fender Twin and 1961 Reverb Unit

This offering is for a beautifully matched set consisting of a 1960 Fender Twin and a 1961 Fender Reverb Unit – being sold together only.

I can send you better photos, too.

Both have been expertly recovered in rough brown tolex and maroon grill cloth, a combination that may or may not have ever been done by Fender. It’s debatable. The Reverb, for sure was offered. The Twin, maybe… It’s a color combo that I really like, so that’s what I had them done in. Most early 60s Twins I see are blonde with oxblood cloth. I couldn’t decide on brown or cream knobs; you get both sets.

1960 FENDER TWIN

The Twin is one of the first post-tweeds (serial number 00093), and it has the 6G8 circuit. It’s 80 watts into a pair of JBL D120F speakers. And, yes, it is loud and glorious, especially when you kick in the lush and hypnotizing harmonic tremolo.

The transformers are 67233 power; 125C1A (606031) choke; and 65548 output. You might think that last one is incorrect, but it has been confirmed by Fender amp expert Nic Grabien as a first-digit misprint of 45548 by the manufacturer, Triad. He estimates about 60 being used in the 6G8 circuit before Fender came out with the 6G8-A circuit which utilized the 45268 transformer. Trust me – this is the correct and original output tranny.

The glass includes a matched quartet of vintage GE 6L6 power tubes and six vintage RCA 12AX7 preamp tubes; all test strong and are worth a hefty sum on their own.

The tilt-back legs, knobs, cloth speaker wires, footswitch, and feet are new, as is the leather handle (one of those badass Amish pieces that will probably outlast all of us).

I just got the amp back from the tech, and you can see from the photos that he needed to replace numerous caps and resistors that had drifted far enough off spec that replacement was warranted. The amp sounded good before; now it sounds great – just like it did when it left the Fullerton factory 66 years ago. Of course, all the old ones components are included in case you want to be Capt. Anal and put them back in.

1961 FENDER REVERB UNIT 

It is serial number R00776, putting it at early 1961. When I got this, it had been recovered and regrilled rather poorly. It was the perfect candidate to pair with the Twin. Originally, it most likely came in rough brown tolex and wheat grillcloth.

Before working on the Twin, my tech went through the Reverb Unit. He replaced one yellow Astron (and it’s included).

Tubes are a vintage RCA 6K6 power tube as well as vintage 12AX7 and 12AY7 preamp tubes. Sounds perfect. Nothing beats a three-knob Fender reverb.

The transformer is 683190-A, and the reverb pan is 6134. The Fender logo, feet, and brown knobs are original (cream ones included, too).

The handle is an Amish product, identical to the one on the Twin. I don’t think the footswitch is original as I’ve never seen one with that long of a ¼” jack; most are shorter.

The sound of the Reverb Unit into the Twin is breathtaking, and I am highly inclined to sell them as a pair (unless someone wants to make me a ridiculous offer on either). I am willing to ship, but it ain’t gonna be cheap. I would envision shipping the Twin in two boxes – one for the cabinet/chassis and one for the speakers – and the Reverb Unit in its own box.
