The 1981 Gibson ES-347TD is a deluxe semi-hollow electric guitar featuring a maple body, a bound ebony fingerboard on a multi-piece neck, and high-output "tarback" humbuckers with a coil-tap switch.

Body & Hardware

  • Body Material: Laminated maple top, back, and sides with a solid maple center block.
  • Dimensions: 16" wide, 18 5/16" long, and 1 3/4" deep.
  • Bridge & Tailpiece: Tune-o-matic bridge with a TP-6 fine-tuning tailpiece.
  • Nut: Polished brass nut with a width of 1 11/16" (43.5 mm).
  • Hardware: Gold-plated standard (some 1981–1984 models featured optional chrome plating).
  • Tuners: Schaller M6 or Gibson tuners with built-in string winders.

Neck & Fingerboard

  • Neck Material: Three-piece laminated mahogany or maple.
  • Fingerboard: Bound ebony with pearloid block position markers.
  • Scale Length: 24 3/4 inches.
  • Frets: 22 low-profile frets.
  • Headstock: Crown inlay with a 14° pitch.

Electronics

  • Pickups: Two exposed or covered Gibson Series VII "tarback" ( epoxy-filled black bottom) humbuckers.
  • Pickup Output (Typical): ~14kΩ to 15.5kΩ DC resistance.
  • Controls: Dual volume, dual tone, 3-way toggle selector switch, and a 2-way coil-tap/splitter toggle switch on the lower horn.
  • Finishes: Antique Sunburst, Natural, Ebony, and Cherry Sunburst.
  • Weight: Approximately 9 lbs to 9.5 lbs (4.1 to 4.3 kg).

This example is in great overall condition despite being a factory second. There are two mineral streaks in the top veneer that cracked slightly during manufacturing - refer to the pics. The strap buttons have been changed, but the instrument is otherwise original. Straight neck measures 1.679" at the nut and has a comfortable medium C carve. Original Tarback pickups measure 15.65k ohms at the neck and 15.29k ohms at the bridge. This one also has the unusual stoptail placement that gives a break angle at the bridge more akin to a trapeze tailpiece. Superb instrument. Weighs 9 pounds and ships in OHSC shown.
