The 2008 Gibson Robot Les Paul is a highly distinct, historic instrument representing Gibson's first wide-release foray into automated self-tuning technology. Developed alongside German company Tronical, the guitar’s standout feature is its ability to tune itself and change alternative tunings in seconds via a specialized motorized system. A breakdown of its specifications, functionality, and current market standing highlights its unique position in Gibson's history:
Key Technical Specifications
- Core Construction: Features a solid mahogany body with a carved maple top and a mahogany set neck.
- Fretboard: Outfitted with an ebony fingerboard (22 frets).
- Note: The 2008 models used premium ebony, but Gibson downgraded subsequent 2009 Robot models to standard rosewood.
- Pickups: Loaded with versatile, high-output Gibson 490R (neck) and 498T (bridge) humbuckers.
- Neck Profile: Typically sports a thicker, vintage-style '50s rounded neck profile.
- Finishes: Released in unique, eye-catching metallic finishes, including Metallic Green, Metallic Red, Purple Metallic, Midnight Manhattan, and Silverburst.
How the "Robot" System Works
The self-tuning technology relies on a localized, integrated system of components:
- The Master Control Knob (MCK): Replacing the lower tone knob, the illuminated MCK acts as the central control interface. Pulling the knob activates the system.
- Motorized Tuners: Turning the MCK allows you to select from standard or several preset alternate tunings (such as Drop D, Open E, DADGAD, or Open G). Strumming the strings prompts the motorized Tronical "Powerhead" tuners to automatically twist until the target pitch is perfectly reached.
- Data-Transmitting Bridge: The specialized Tune-O-Matic bridge transmits string frequency data directly to the internal computer processor without interfering with the analog signal path.
