Vintage DiMarzio Super Distortion USA Double Cream Neck, 1978-81, ONE OWNER!

This is a vintage DiMarzio Super Distortion humbucker, made in the USA in at latest 1981 as I purchased the guitar it was fitted to in August 1981 and still have the guitar. Some spec. details such as the slot head screws securing the bobbins suggest it might be as early as 1978.

The pickup has therefore been in my ownership for 45 years now so I know the full history. It is in good clean condition with only genuine play wear to the top of the bobbins-the distinctive bevelling to the treble/bridge side bobbin (pictured) is entirely down to the picking style I used over its first ten years. It is far from a pristine museum piece but given that people seem to pay a fortune for new stuff to be reliced (messed up) in pursuit of "mojo" I can't really tell whether this adds to the value or detracts from it.

It has a two conductor and shield wiring, I did have it coil tapped from the centre (between coils) in the mid eighties but didn't like the single coil tone so removed the external cable, the tap is still there tucked under the tape if required (pictured) and does not affect usage otherwise. There are some areas of the cable sheath that have been scuffed up going in and out of various projects but there are no shorts or crackles. Cable is 21cm measured to the end of the outer, it comes with its original surround and as far as I recall, springs & screws are the originals too.

It measures 13kohms DCR and sounds exactly as you would expect so if it is late seventies-early eighties aggressive rock tones you are after (Ace Frehley, Randy Rhoads, Adrian Smith, Dimebag, Phil Collen and so many others, even Kurt Cobain...), this is it. If you drop the height and back off the volume, it does clean up well but Al DiMeola notwithstanding, that misses the point somewhat.

My tastes these days run more to P90s through Tweeds and it has been sitting unused for some time which is a waste of a great pickup. Please see the bridge pickup listed separately and also a set of very rare Evans Eliminators that I am also selling.
