It at some time before it ended up with me had a cap on that knob, as there is glue there now.

It's in 6 out of 10 shape, some minor solder burns, some scratches, but no cracks

I asked AI and got back this while pointing it to Hofner and Framus (It is definitely European by the pot)

So this particular knob was likely a tone control, not volume.

The "512" also fits the same date-code pattern seen on other period Preh pots from Hofner instruments in that source's examples — a 3-digit code read as week + year (their 1963 Hofner President pot is stamped "383" = week 38 of 1963; a 1959 Hofner Colorama pot is stamped "459" = week 45 of 1959). Following that same logic, "512" would decode to week 51 of 1962. That lines up well with the Preh-supplied German guitar hardware window already established, and tightens things to a c.1962 build.

So the fuller picture: a c.1962 German-made archtop/hollow-body, most likely Hofner (given the strong Preh-pot association), with a linear-taper tone control mounted on this separate hook-shaped cutaway control panel. Framus/Klira remain possible since they shared the same Preh supply chain, but Hofner is the best-documented match.
