If you’re a diehard Gibson Les Paul traditionalist, this is probably not for you... or maybe it is. This guitar started life as a 2012 Gibson Les Paul Custom, but it must have been very heavy. The owner took it to renowned Boston-area luthier John Mouradian for some weight reduction, and as you can see from the photos, the guitar was largely routed out except for the area where the tailpiece mounts to the body. Coil splits and a pull-phase were also installed. Even with all that woodwork, it still weighs 7.8 pounds, so it must have been a hefty 10-plus pounds before the work was done.

While a mod like this is blasphemous to some, we really like the sound of this guitar. The chambering gives it a cleaner, leaner tone with more sparkle and less darkness than your typical Les Paul. Taking away a chunk of wood also takes away some of the “chunk” from the tone, but we like its jangly, more spacious-sounding nature.

“Other than that,” it’s bone stock, with pretty much zero fret wear and only light handling marks on the nitro finish. It includes the original case, inspection card, and faded receipts from Mouradian Guitars. If you’ve always wanted a nicely preserved Les Paul but wanted a little “less” Paul, this is a very appealing guitar and a great-sounding player.
