Selling a Power Jazz Bass Special. The bass has a couple cosmetic blemishes that are pictured. It sounds great, plays great, and has had the potentiometers freshly cleaned with a new battery. This was a groundbreaking instrument that featured Fender’s very first onboard active preamp circuit. While named a Jazz Bass, it is actually a hybrid "P/J" bass, pairing a Precision Bass body and neck pickup with a slim Jazz Bass neck and bridge pickup.
The defining trait of the "Power" version is its unique Active Tone Enhancement (A.T.E.) circuit, powered by a single 9-volt battery. Unlike modern active basses that use standard 2-band or 3-band EQs, the 1980s Power Special uses a multi-tiered filtering system managed by a 3-way mini-toggle switch:
* Mode 1: Passive – The preamp is bypassed. The tone knob operates like a traditional, vintage Fender tone control.
* Mode 2: Low Frequency Boost – Engages the active circuit to inject a deep, thumping bottom-end "pop" ideal for slap bass, funk, and reggae.
* Mode 3: Midrange Frequency Boost – Shifts the active circuit to emphasize punchy mids and high-end "brilliance," allowing the bass to easily cut through heavy rock mixes.
