Up for sale is my 1972 Gibson SG-I, an increasingly hard-to-find vintage Gibson. Introduced in 1972, the SG-I was Gibson’s stripped-down rock machine, featuring a single bridge humbucker, wraparound bridge, and straightforward volume and tone controls. Lightweight, resonant, and incredibly responsive, it’s one of Gibson’s hidden gems from the early ’70s.

One of the most striking features of this guitar is its original Cherry nitrocellulose finish, which has naturally faded over the past 50-plus years. As was common with Gibson’s early-‘70s Cherry finishes, portions of the red aniline dye have mellowed into beautiful walnut and amber tones while other areas retain their rich cherry color. The result is a stunning, naturally aged vintage appearance that simply can’t be replicated.

Equally impressive is how original this guitar remains. It retains its original Gibson “double-line” Deluxe tuners with cream keystone buttons, original bridge pickup, original wraparound bridge, original electronics, original hardware, and original finish. The only modification is a professionally installed bone nut, a tasteful upgrade that improves tuning stability while preserving the guitar’s vintage integrity.

Condition

This SG-I is in very good vintage condition and has aged exactly the way collectors hope to see. The finish displays authentic fading, honest playwear, and the small dings and scratches expected from more than fifty years of careful use. Nothing has been refinished or altered beyond the replacement bone nut.

The neck is straight, the frets have plenty of life remaining, and the guitar plays effortlessly. The original bridge humbucker delivers everything you’d expect from an early-’70s Gibson—strong output, excellent sustain, and the unmistakable growl that makes these minimalist SGs such rewarding instruments to play.
