Up for sale is a beautiful 2013 Gibson Custom Shop Historic Collection 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue VOS in its classic Lemon Burst finish. The 2013 Historic line is widely regarded as one of Gibson Custom Shop’s standout production years, offering exceptional craftsmanship, highly figured maple tops, long neck tenons, hide-glue construction in key areas, and CustomBucker pickups that capture much of the magic of the original late-’50s Bursts. This example is particularly special, weighing in at a very comfortable 8 lbs. 7.8 oz. while being remarkably lively and resonant acoustically. Before you even plug it in, this guitar rings with impressive sustain, volume, and responsiveness—the kind of resonance that seasoned Les Paul players immediately notice.
This guitar is in solid Very Good condition. It remains very clean overall but does show honest cosmetic wear from careful use over the years. There are scattered light scratches, minor swirl marks, a handful of tiny dings, and some small finish imperfections as shown in the photos. There is also a small area of clear coat lacquer chipping adjacent to the tailpiece, which has been carefully photographed. None of these cosmetic flaws affect the guitar structurally or functionally, and overall it remains a very attractive, well-cared-for Historic Reissue. The frets show essentially no measurable wear and have many years of life remaining.
One point worth mentioning for complete transparency is that a previous owner temporarily installed a set of Tim Shaw humbuckers. Thankfully, he retained the original pickups. We have carefully retlinstalled the original Gibson CustomBucker pickups bring it back to stock. Because of this swap, the solder joints are no longer factory original. Additionally, the pickup covers had been removed from the original CustomBuckers at some point and later professionally reinstalled. The original PAF-style identification stickers that are normally affixed to the backs of the pickups are attached to the blue painter’s tape the previous owner used to identify each pickup, as shown in the photos.
As you’d expect from a great Historic ‘59, the neck is substantial without feeling cumbersome, and the CustomBuckers deliver everything players hope for from a Burst-style Les Paul: warm, articulate neck tones, an open and woody midrange, and a bridge pickup with plenty of bite while retaining outstanding clarity. Combined with the guitar’s unusually resonant acoustic character and comfortably light weight, this is an exceptionally inspiring instrument that simply begs to be played.
This was recently given a professional setup with a fresh set of 10-46 gauge strings, so it plays beautifully with a straight neck, low action, and accurate intonation.
