Built by Retrovox Vintage Audio, this custom passive guitar extension cabinet combines a genuine 1961 Watterson mid-century furniture speaker enclosure with a vintage 1966 CTS 8-inch American-made ceramic speaker. The result is a warm, articulate vintage American voice with excellent note definition, natural speaker compression, and balanced response that pairs beautifully with low-powered guitar amplifiers.
The cabinet retains its original walnut veneer, woven grille cloth, tapered legs, and brass ferrules, preserving the elegant mid-century appearance that originally made these cabinets stand out. A standard 1/4-inch mono speaker jack has been professionally installed for reliable compatibility with modern guitar amplifiers while maintaining the cabinet's vintage character.
At the heart of the cabinet is a genuine CTS (Chicago Telephone Supply) 8-inch ribbed paper-cone ceramic speaker carrying EIA code 137610, identifying it as a CTS driver manufactured during the 10th week of 1966. CTS supplied speakers to numerous American hi-fi, musical instrument, and OEM manufacturers throughout the 1960s and earned a reputation for smooth midrange, controlled bass, and musical paper-cone breakup that translates exceptionally well to guitar.
During evaluation, this CTS proved to be an outstanding match for the Watterson enclosure, producing warm cleans, articulate edge-of-breakup tones, and smooth vintage compression without harshness. The combination delivers a balanced, room-filling sound that works equally well for blues, classic rock, garage rock, indie, Americana, surf, harmonica, and low-volume recording.
