Gibson / 1953 Southern Jumbo
—A top-of-the-line model with a round-shoulder body
The Southern Jumbo was born in 1942 alongside the J-45.
Its name comes from the fact that it was marketed to the music scene of the southern states of the United States (Dixie).
—Southern Jumbo Decoration
The headstock of this period features a simple design, similar to the J-45, with only the Gibson gold silkscreen logo, rather than the mother-of-pearl crown inlay or Gibson logo.
The major differences lie in the fretboard inlay and body decoration.
While the J-45 uses dot position markers, this model employs double parallelogram inlays.
This inlay was often used on Gibson's higher-end models, and was later adopted on higher-end square-shoulder models such as the Hummingbird and Dove.
Body Decoration
Compared to the 1953 J-45, the purfling decorating the body is white/black/white 3P, while the Southern Jumbo uses white/black/white/white/black/white 7P.
This makes it look more stylish even with the same 16-inch body.
While the J-45 features a single-line rosette around the soundhole, the Southern Jumbo employs a double-ring design.
This demonstrates how, while sharing similar specifications with the J-45, the Southern Jumbo is distinguished by its more luxurious ornamentation.
Experience the unique sound—a crisp, vintage tone with a subtle richness—reflected by weather checking and scratches that suggest countless years of playing.
If you're looking for a well-preserved early 1950s Southern Jumbo, don't miss this opportunity!
