TELEFUNKEN D77 Stereo Microphone
Too Beautiful to Throw Away
The Telefunken D77 is one of those designs. Built around an ingenious mechanical stereo system, it combines two independently movable microphone elements inside a beautifully engineered housing, allowing the stereo image to be adjusted mechanically rather than electronically. Even decades later, the precision of the construction remains impressive.
Unfortunately, the original capsules in this example had reached the end of their service life. One produced no output, while the other had become mechanically unstable. Rather than retiring an otherwise exceptional piece of German engineering, both capsules were replaced with a carefully matched pair of modern capsules that fit perfectly into the original suspension system. The remarkable internal Telefunken construction—with its machined metal support beams, precision mounting rings and compliant rubber isolation system—has been fully preserved.
The result is a stereo microphone that retains the original concept and mechanical brilliance while delivering reliable modern performance.

BUILD & DESIGN
The D77 is essentially two cardioid microphones built into a single mechanical platform.
Each capsule rotates independently around a central pivot while remaining accurately aligned by an ingenious locking mechanism. Red orientation markings clearly indicate the forward axis of each capsule, making stereo positioning quick and intuitive.
When positioned around the centre pivot, the capsules create continuously adjustable stereo recording angles between approximately 90° and a near-coincident arrangement. By changing their mechanical relationship, the microphone can produce a wide range of stereo perspectives without changing microphones.
The design is even more versatile than that. The two microphone assemblies can be separated from their centred position, allowing recording angles approaching 180°, or arranged independently to capture almost any stereo geometry. They may also be detached completely and used as two individual mono microphones.
Unusually elegant mechanical solution to stereo recording—one that reflects the inventive engineering philosophy of Telefunken during the classic era of German microphone design.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Type: Passive Stereo Dynamic Microphone (refurbished)
Polar Pattern: Cardioid (per capsule)
Configuration: Adjustable dual-element stereo system
Output: Dual balanced XLR
Frequency Response: approximately 60 Hz – 16 kHz
Mounting: Standard microphone stand / boom compatible
SOUND CHARACTERISTICS
The newly installed matched capsules produce a stereo image with excellent channel consistency and stable imaging.
The microphone delivers a natural, spacious presentation that works particularly well on acoustic instruments, piano, drum overheads, room recordings and live ensemble capture. The adjustable stereo geometry allows the recording perspective to be tailored to the source, from a focused image to an expansive stereo field without changing microphones or mounting hardware.
Perhaps the greatest strength of the D77 remains its flexibility. Few vintage stereo microphones offer such a mechanically elegant way to explore different stereo techniques while remaining fast and intuitive to operate.
FREQUENCY RESPONSE
Estimated Frequency Response: 60 Hz – 15 kHz
Smooth and balanced midrange
- Controlled bass response
- slightly doll high-frequency
