Altec 9470 Preamplifier pair (think Langevin AM-16)

John Hall, legendary audio equipment designer, was responsible for the Langevin AM-16. The Altec 470/9470 is virtually the same as the Langevin, but, according to producer Mark Neill, with better, beefy transformers. This is the heaviest 2 space rack unit I've ever hoisted into a rack, just crazy, about 25 pounds.

Here's some info about Mr. Hall:

"In the late 60′s and early 70′s, American designers like John Hall progressed recording technology by introducing some of the finest Solid State transformer based preamp designs anyone had ever seen. First for Altec and then for companies like Electrodyne. Electrodyne built the first ever “console” as we know them now. Echo sends…replaceable channel strips…VCA’s. These were highly sought after designs and everyone who was everyone recorded on them. The Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, Motown, Stax, Decca and so on…. Electrodyne eventually became quad-eight during the early 70′s. He developed a variety of products: Passive graphic equalizers, rotary step attenuators, plug in EQ modules, and the first commercially manufactured solid state mic pre amp, the Langevin AM-16. He continued with cutting edge designs, such as the SPA690 Discreet Op-amp block used in many Inward Connections and Tree Audio products today. In 2006, John Hall was presented with the AES Silver Medal Award for nearly 40 years of innovative work in the development of phonograph and tape recording and reproduction equipment, stereophonic technology, mixing consoles, and signal processing equipment."

These preamps are legendary & amazing, but I've retired and no longer need so many. I will supply more pictures when I pull it out of the rack! Obviously nothing else in the photo is included.

One small caveat: Altec changed the model number, but not the circuit. If I pop the lid to refresh my memory, I believe I will find that the modules are labeled "470A" rather than "9470". I found an old Altec catalog, which stated clearly that 9470 was just an updated model number for the sake of consistency with other products, NOT a changed design.
