Gibson / 1969 J-160E Cherry Sunburst
-Gibson Logo Dot
The Gibson dot made of mother-of-pearl used on the headstock is characterized by the absence of the dot on the "i" starting in 1969.
There is an anecdote that this is because Norlin Industries, Gibson's parent company at the time, in order to cut costs, stopped the process of cutting out the Gibson letters and embedding them in the headstock, and instead painted the Gibson letters onto a mother-of-pearl plate, making it difficult to reproduce the dot and thus omitting it. The logo is a testament to its quality.
You can see that the paint has peeled off, revealing the mother-of-pearl block underneath.
-P-90 and Bracing
The J-160E features a 16-inch round shoulder and horizontally positioned ladder bracing.
The spruce top employs a three-ply construction (plywood) to suppress excess vibration and prevent feedback during output.
The pickups are P-90 magnetic pickups, characterized by their crisp and articulate sound.
—Specifications unique to 1969
In 1969, the J-160E underwent significant changes to its appearance.
Cherry sunburst was adopted as the color.
Cherry sunburst was first used on the Hummingbird in 1960, then on the J-45 in 1962, and finally on the J-160E.
At the same time, the pickguard was changed to a thick, reddish, large pickguard.
The pickguard uses the screw-fastening method adopted since 1968.
Controls
The P-90 controls are a sombrero-style knob with one volume and one tone control.
It offers a different kind of coolness compared to top hat knobs.
Unlike a guitar with a smooth tone, the J-160E is characterized by its short sustain and sharp tone, making it an irresistible rock guitar when played through the pickups.
Experience the charm of a truly authentic instrument.
