1999 Gibson Les Paul SmartWood Exotic – Canacharana Top – Natural Satin – USA Made – Professional Headstock Repair – Gibson Gear Deluxe Case
For sale is my 1999 Gibson Les Paul SmartWood Exotic, made in the USA.
Serial number 91529311, dating the guitar to the 152nd day of 1999, making it 1 June 1999. The back of the headstock has the original Made in USA stamp and SmartWood Series decal.
This is one of Gibson’s more interesting late-90s Les Paul models. The SmartWood Series was built using selected exotic tonewoods and finished in a natural satin style, giving these guitars a more organic and understated look than many standard gloss Les Paul models.
The standout feature on this example is the Canacharana carved top. It gives the guitar a distinctive natural appearance and makes it a rarer, more characterful alternative to a regular Les Paul Studio. These SmartWood models are much less common than standard production Studios or Standards, and this is a great example for someone looking for a USA Gibson Les Paul with something a bit different about it.
I am selling this guitar as part of a larger personal collection, simply to make space and fund something new. It has been properly stored, well looked after, and prepared for sale with freshly dressed frets, a full setup and a fresh set of strings.
This is a ready-to-play guitar, not something that needs immediate work. The only significant condition point is the professional headstock repair, which is described clearly below.

The guitar has the classic Gibson set-neck feel, sustain and humbucker tone, but with the more unusual SmartWood look and specification. It feels like a proper Les Paul, but visually it stands apart from the usual burst or gloss-finished models.
Condition
The guitar is in very good overall condition for its age, but I have listed it as Good due to the professionally repaired headstock break.
The repair is visible on the back of the headstock and has been photographed clearly. It is solid, stable and has no movement, tuning problems or playability issues.
A properly repaired Gibson headstock is commonly regarded as very strong, and the glued repair seam can often be as strong as, or stronger than, the surrounding original wood. The guitar plays as it should and has been freshly set up, with dressed frets and new strings.
I want to be completely transparent about the repair, which is why it is clearly shown and described. Because of this, the guitar is best viewed as a player-grade example rather than a collector-grade one. It is priced accordingly, but aside from the repair it presents very well and is a very cool, uncommon USA-made Gibson Les Paul.
